The Sydney University Dramatic Society will be celebrating its 125th anniversary next month.

To mark the occasion, the society will be performing the first production it ever staged, Aesychlus’ Agamemnon. The performance will take place in the university’s Great Hall, the location of the first production and one of Sydney’s most iconic venues, for one night only.

Agamemnon follows the story of King Agamemnon’s return from the Trojan Wars, and his wifeKlytamnaistra’s revenge for his awful deeds.

It seems only fitting that a society that has contributed so much to the Australian theatre indusrty should perform one of the greatest stories of Western mythology. The anniversary celebrations will see the reunion of many of the society’s alumni. In the past, the likes of Andrew Upton, John Bell, Gough and Margaret Whitlam, Germaine Greer, Clive James, John Gaden and the Chaser team have taken part in SUDS.

Agamemnon will be directed by Pierce Wilcox, and star current SUDS members.

Agamemnon will play at the University of Sydney’s Great Hall on Friday May 22. The event will be black tie, and followed by a drinks reception. Tickets are available here.
