Described as “one of the most exciting visual artists of our time”, El Anatsui uses unconventional tools such as chainsaws to craft his sprawling, tactile sculptures.

His Carriageworks exhibition will open on Thursday January 7 and will feature over 30 of the artist’s pieces. Serving as a celebration of El Anatsui’s entire body of work, some of the sculptures will date back to the ’70s, when the unconcentional artist first began turning heads.

Also on display will be some of El Anatsui’s famous and much sought-after bottle top sculptures, visually striking pieces that have been fashioned out of thousands of flattened and twisted bottle tops.

Seems like one man’s trash is another man’s treasure after all.

El Anatsui: Five Decadeswill from from Thursday January 7 until Sunday March 6 at Carriageworks. Entry is free.
