Qantas is set to offer additional baggage allowance for musicians from Monday April 13. It is an update of its first allowance, which came into effect in 2012.

The announcement comes just a week after the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN) and Travel Beyond Group unveiled a series of discounts for touring Australian musicians with Virgin, car hire and hotels/apartments.

The latest Qantas offer includes a free baggage allowance of three pieces (at 23kgs per piece). Only artists travelling with musical and touring equipment are eligible. It is only applicable to Qantas domestic flights (with a QF flight number) and does not include lights operated by partner airlines. Some regional flights have baggage limitations.

Musicians must be current members of one of the following associations (and may be asked to prove their membership at check-in).

• Association of Artist Managers

• Australian Independent Record Labels Association

• The Australasian Performing Right Association

• The Australian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society

• Live Performance Australia

• Musicians Union of Australia

• Country Music Association of Australia

• Folk Alliance

• Australian Chamber Orchestra

• Opera Australia

• AMIN’s member organisations: Queensland Music Network, Contemporary Music Services Tasmania, Music NSW, Music NT, Music Victoria and WAM.

Qantas encourages eligible musicians to book flights via a specialist music industry travel agency. In the case of the request being submitted by an Australian promoter, the latter must be a member of one of the above associations, and will not need to supply a membership number for each individual musician.
