[MUSIC: Interview] Carus Thompson

Carus Thompson is a hard man to interview. He’s a friendly bloke, and highly lucid to boot, but our attempts at communication are beset more than once by his current tour – more specifically, the lack of mobile phone reception in the middle of the desert at Mining Camp 29A. “I’m up in the Pilbara in far north Western Australia, touring the mining camps, and it’s absolutely stunning out here,” he says. “It’s a very different way of touring compared to what I’ve been doing recently, but in some ways it’s very much the same. Music has always been a communal thing; I reckon it’s probably one of our oldest and most important rituals. Its importance for community is very clear out here.”
